It’s crunch time

tumblr_mggywaAIII1qf9lsjo1_1280[1]Everyone always says that before spring break they’re going to hit the gym in order to be ready for bikini season, but now that its here, and you haven’t what are you supposed to do? You feel like you aren’t beach body ready! There’s still time though, with only a week left before spring break you can start your workouts! You may not see drastic changes right away but you have to start somewhere. By exercising each day and doing 30-60 minutes of cardio you’re body will feel better, making you feel better. If you do shorter, but higher intensity workouts with few short breaks in between your body is going to thank you and you will feel better about hitting the beach! Another thing you can do to help you slim down is avoid bloating and foods that are bad for you. Stop eating all the salty and sweet foods you love to consume. They are not good for you, your stomach becomes bloated and all of a sudden you become tired and shut down. Drink water and tea to keep your metabolism up and give you energy for the rest of your day. Don’t forget to eat breakfast, get the carbs and protein you need! Also eat small meals frequently, between every 3-5 hours, that way you will be able to stay focused. An easy beginner workout to try consists of:

Running/Jogging- 25 minutes

25 crunches

20 burpees

25 squats

25 jumping jacks

15 pushups

Remember that when you’re trying to lose weight or get fit, you can’t have too much focus on the working out part, or the eating part. In order to lose weight you have to have energy to do the workouts, we get our energy from food. You have to remember to eat otherwise you wont see any results and you’re body will shut down because you haven’t given it the nutrients needed. Once you’ve reached the results you want, make sure to keep working out if you want to stay there. Now theres one more week till spring break, it’s crunch time.

Style Guide: Prom

Prom is arriving faster than you think!  The week Longmont High School gets back from Spring Break, is the week the magic begins.  With a stressful month ahead of what to wear and who to go with, here are some easy styling tips and trends to help you choose this years prom style:

One trend that has been big on the red carpet this season is metallic accents and gowns.  Metallics go great with any skin tone, because they come in silver, gold metalic2and more.  Also, metallic are a great way to pop a simple white or black dress.  metalic1If you’re looking for a one colored dress, pair it with some fun metallic shoes, or add an edge with a metallic handbag for the night.  If you’re looking to make a statement, try looking for a dress with a metallic bustier or skirt.  The shine will make your dress stand out from the group.

If you aren’t quite feeling the edge of a metallic accent or dress, and aren’t fond of the crazy patterns, try going for a simple dress, with a bright color to make your dress one to remember.  There are so many great colors out this season; everything from a classic red that is sure to stand out, or even go bold with a bright almost neon color.  These dresses are simple with one solid color, but leave a lot of room to accessorize with big jewelry and fun shoes.popcolor2 Popcolor1

Sometimes finding a dress isn’t the hardest part of getting your prom style together; sometimes the hair and accessories can be the most stressful.  Depending on your different dress style, here are some fun hairstyles that will help complement your dress. If your dress is a sweetheart cut, old hollywood waves are a great choice to accent your gown.  To get this look, here are some easy steps:

1. Part hair into a deep one-side part, and curl entire head (rollers, iron, etc.)

2.  If you’re using a curling iron, make sure you use no smaller than a one inch barrel, and curl all curls in the same direction.

3.  Spray head with medium hold hairspray, and brush through all of your curls.

4.  Gather hair into one side pony, and fully brush through curls until they look like one large curl.

5.  For extra hold, use flat clips to define the curls, or add in extra hairspray.

lowsidebun

If you want to draw more attention to your jewelry, or have a higher neckline on your gown, try a sleek side-bun.  There are many different ways to style a side-bun, and it is an effortless look.  Here are some quick tips on how to get the perfect side-bun for prom:

1.  Gather your hair into a low side pony.  You can either part your hair for a more defined look, or sleek it all back.

2.  Twist, braid, or a mixture of both your hair into a bun.

3.  Add some jewels, or even a flower or colorful hair tie into your hair to make your bun stand out!

4.  If you’re looking for a messy up do, try curling or waving your hair before step one!

Want plus need plus love now equals Wanelo. Wanelo is a universal catalog of products organized by people. Users can post products for sale, buy things they want, and see what other users are buying or putting on their “Epic Wish List”. “It’s like the social network of shopping,” said Becca Real, sophomore. Some people have compared it to Pinterest, except on Wanelo, when you click or tap on a product, you are redirected directly to the site you can buy it from. Also, you can follow your friends like you would on Twitter. With an app available on the App Store and Android Market, it’s easy to make an account and start shopping. Many student use Wanelo, and you can see pictures posted on other social networks of things that they found and want.

shirt

One of the many hilarious shirts found on Wanelo makes a parody of Taylor Swift lyrics.

The company was founded Deena Varshavskaya, a Siberian native who moved to San Francisco to start a “user experience” consulting business. When she started Wanelo, there was almost no interest, because users and investors did not see the purpose. But, surprisingly, after Varshavskaya and her team cut as many features from the site as they could, the site took off. Simplicity is what users liked, and more users meant bigger investors. Varshavskaya has since put her old business on hold to focus on making Wanelo successful.

This sink is also a fish tank and is available on Wanelo

The product variety is what attracted Alexis Cox, sophomore. “I love everything on it. You can find cute clothes, funny t-shirts, and weird things that you would never find in a store,” she commented. Phone cases, cute dresses, jewelry, hoodies and shirts with funny saying on them, unique bedroom furniture, and almost everything in between, can be found on Wanelo. Wanelo has taken the high school demographic by storm, as seen in their primary investor’s data. High school girls are constantly looking for something unique to have, and Wanelo provides a whole database of just that. Starting an account is easy, so go online or get the App and start finding products you want, need, and love.

Job of the month: Lifeguard

photo

Abby Levesque poses for a picture.

Life guarding is a job that requires a ton of responsibility and special swimming skills. A lot of high school students who consider themselves strong swimmers become life guards over the summer and even during the school year. Abby Levesque, sophomore, works as a life guard at Sunset, Centennial, and Roosevelt pool. Like most life guards Levesque’s job consists of watching kids and adults, and occasionally having to save lives. Though Levesque has never had to save a person from drowning she has had plenty of practice due to the annual fake saves she must perform to show her readiness. The test begins with “someone pretending to drown, I have to blow my whistle, go out where they are, and then rescue them. If they are drowning I can carry them back myself, if they are unconscious I have to blow my whistle three times to let other life guards know they must come out with a back board and assist me.” Her favorite part of the job would be “telling kids and people what to do.” Over all, life guarding is a very difficult job that takes time, effort, and a lot of patience. It can be fun but you must remember that there are people who depend on you to keep them safe.

Style Guide: Winter how-to’s

It’s a new year, and time for a new you! For 2013, there are already new styles trending. It is easy to get caught up in the new fashion trends, so here are a few easy ‘how to’ tips for these new styles:

1. Collars are making a comeback this year, adding a bit of vintage edge to your style.  They are an easy fit into any wardrobe because they can be worn in many different ways.  Collars look great under crew neck sweaters and can even stand alone for a warmer day.  There are many different styles of collars such as the Peter Pan collar, which is rounded, or the traditional pointed collar.  Also, there are even collar necklaces in stores, to add an accessory to any outfit.  Jeweled, studded,  and patterned collars are really big right now, and add an extra flare to the new year’s style.

2.  Changing your hairstyle can be a big decision for the new year, but here is a hairstyle that can easily be worn two ways.  Strait across bangs aren’t for everyone, but they are a great and easy change to your look.  If you have a heart or round shaped face, strait across bangs add emphasis to your eyes and face.  Strait across bangs can be worn both down and pulled back, because you want your bangs to be at least eyebrow length when styled.  Bangs also add maturity to your features.  Strait across bangs are a big decision, however they can be styled many to fit your new wardrobe.

3.  Bling is being taken to a whole new level this year; with studs.  Studs are everywhere, and look great with anything! They are a simple addtion to any wardrobe, because they come on almost everything.  From shirts, to jeans, to boots, to bags, studs are making an impact this 2013 season.  Studs add a edgy-hipster look to any outfit, and are a great change for this new year.  You can also buy studs at your local craft store, and add them easily yourself to any clothing item.  Studs are a great transition from jewels this year, and will make your look stand out.

Job of the month: Starbucks

Ashley Raykovitz poses for the camera.

Ashley Raykovitz, senior, has been working at Starbucks on 17th and Hover for 4 months. She really enjoys seeing the “regular customers, especially when they recognize you.” In addition to this, Raykovitz’s favorite thing about her job is the “free coffee, the interaction, rushes, and when someone makes a big order.” The only time Raykovitz can say she’s messed up was when she “dropped a drink on someone in the drive thru.” She apologized and then made the customer a new drink. Raykovitz has enjoyed her job so far and believes that she will continue to work there throughout her senior year.
